Hackers drained $6.36 billion from cryptocurrency exchange Binance across 10 blockchains in a 20-minute span, en.wikipedia.org reported. Binance said the breach originated through unauthorized access on a DevOps engineer's laptop, though no private keys were leaked. Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs attributed the attack to North Korea's Lazarus Group, also known as TraderTraitor, who utilized an EIP-7702 multi-signature setup to compromise hot wallets.
Following the incident, Binance halted trades and suspended withdrawals across 1,447 networks, while deposits remain operational. Tether froze $1.57 billion and Circle froze $800 million in connected funds, bringing total frozen assets to roughly $2.37 billion. Bitcoin (BTC) dropped by 5% to under $80,000 following the announcement, en.wikipedia.org reported.
Binance co-CEO Richard Teng confirmed that user losses will be covered by the exchange's SAFU fund, stating that customer balances remain secure. The company plans to release a proof of reserves on November 2, 2026, while the United States Secret Service works to trace the stolen assets.
