Update to THORChain pauses swaps across 10 networks following block reorg bug

Based on reporting by crypto.news; not yet independently confirmed.

THORChain halted swaps across 10 networks after an Ethereum reorg triggered a 10 ETH refund error, causing RUNE to drop over 18% before the user returned the funds.

An Ethereum block reorganization caused a 10 ETH discrepancy valued at approximately $27,000, triggering an automated solvency halt across THORChain vaults. As previously reported, THORChain node operators paused swaps across 10 networks following a reorganization issue. The protocol's native token, RUNE, fell more than 18% over a 24-hour period during the disruption.

According to crypto.news, the problem occurred at 11:34 UTC on October 31 when Ethereum underwent a one-block reorg that removed a previously validated 10 ETH deposit. Because the associated swap failed to meet a price limit, THORChain's protocol issued an unbacked refund from its vault. The automated solvency checker caught the balance shortfall and halted Ethereum swaps within two minutes before operators suspended outbound actions on 10 chains, including Bitcoin (BTC), Solana (SOL), and Tron (TRX).

THORChain stated that the recipient subsequently returned the 10 ETH, restoring the vault balance. According to Cointelegraph and crypto.news, the resulting halt also disrupted transaction routes linked to the $6.3 billion Binance hack. Developers are preparing code adjustments to prevent discarded block transactions from triggering protocol refunds before resuming full services.
