Tether Expands Native Bitcoin Settlement for USDT via RGB Protocol and Lightning Network
CIE News ·
Tether Chief Executive Officer Paolo Ardoino has officially confirmed plans to bring USDT settlement natively back to the Bitcoin network. The strategic initiative establishes a specialized settlement framework utilizing the RGB protocol, UTEXO issuance, and the Lightning Network to facilitate low-fee, high-speed transfers. This deployment represents a formal pivot away from earlier considerations of launching an independent, standalone Tether blockchain, choosing instead to anchor the issuance and movement of USDT directly upon Bitcoin's cryptographic base.
The architecture relies on the RGB protocol's client-side validation paradigm to execute smart contracts and manage digital asset states without cluttering the primary Bitcoin ledger. Through UTEXO issuance, digital asset tokens are cryptographically bound to specific Bitcoin transaction outputs, preserving verifiable ownership within Bitcoin’s transactional framework. By pairing RGB with the Lightning Network, Tether enables off-chain transactional channels capable of routing native USDT payments near-instantly with nominal fees. This modular structure circumvents the operational complexities, security vulnerabilities, and liquidity fragmentation that typically accompany the deployment of a segregated, standalone chain.
Alongside Tether’s technical confirmation, institutional momentum is gathering around Bitcoin-centric settlement mechanics. Concurrent discussions convened in Washington involving global financial firm Morgan Stanley explored structured adoption channels and institutional frameworks for Bitcoin-native stablecoin settlement. Tether's current trajectory establishes the RGB protocol and Lightning Network integration as the core pathway for native Bitcoin payments, aligning stablecoin utility with ongoing institutional evaluations of decentralized settlement infrastructure.
