HSBC brands upcoming Hong Kong dollar stablecoin as RedCoin
CIE News ·
HSBC has announced its upcoming Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin, named HSBC RedCoin, which is planned for release by late 2026 under local regulatory rules.
HSBC revealed the branding for its upcoming Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin, named HSBC RedCoin, on September 30, 2026. According to KuCoin, the bank intends to launch the stablecoin by the end of 2026, targeting initial use cases in peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments. The token will maintain a 1:1 peg to the Hong Kong dollar and is designed to be fully backed by segregated, high-quality liquid assets under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority sandbox and licensing framework.
The stablecoin is slated for integration into the HSBC Hong Kong mobile application and the PayMe platform, which serves more than 3.3 million local retail users. KuCoin reported that the first rollout phase will emphasize consumer payments, fraud prevention, education, and redemption mechanisms. In later stages, HSBC plans to expand the token into wholesale payments, corporate treasury management, and tokenized corporate asset settlements.
A survey of 1,060 Hong Kong residents conducted by HSBC indicated that 74% of participants recognized at least one use case for stablecoins, predominantly digital asset trading, tokenized investments, and peer-to-peer transfers. However, KuCoin reported that 26% of respondents mistakenly believed stablecoins are issued by government authorities, while 10% expected them to yield interest.
