US government moves $1.01 billion in bitcoin from Bitfinex hack

Wallets tied to the US government transferred 12,267 BTC worth roughly $1.01 billion to unlabeled addresses, with on-chain data pointing to an internal reshuffle rather than an exchange sale.
Wallets linked to the U.S. government transferred 12,267 Bitcoin (BTC), worth approximately $1.01 billion, to new unlabeled addresses on October 8, 2026. According to CoinDesk, citing data from blockchain intelligence platform Arkham, the assets originated from a wallet holding funds confiscated from the 2016 Bitfinex hack. No exchange deposits were recorded, with the transaction structure aligning with an internal reshuffle rather than an asset sale.
The activity comes after transfers a day earlier, when about 3,200 BTC valued at roughly $264 million and $119 million in USDT from Bitfinex and FTX/Alameda seizures were sent to Coinbase Prime deposit addresses. CoinDesk noted that Coinbase Prime deposits do not inherently signal sales because the service provides custody, and a March 2025 executive order instructed seized bitcoin to be placed into a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve without being sold. Arkham data indicates the U.S. government still holds about $25.5 billion in total cryptocurrency.
