Metaplanet launches $160 million share buyback amid debt refinancing
CIE News ·
Metaplanet launched an initial $160 million share repurchase as part of a broader buyback authorization, following plans to refinance its Bitcoin-backed loans, according to CryptoSlate.
Metaplanet announced a capital return program to repurchase up to 200 million common shares between October 14, 2026, and October 13, 2027. Under the initial phase starting October 14, 2026, the firm plans to acquire up to 96.9 million shares for approximately ¥25.3 billion, or $160 million, via the Tokyo Stock Exchange's ToSTNeT-3 system. CryptoSlate reported that this transaction would represent about 7.1% of the company's outstanding stock.
The repurchase is part of a newly approved ¥60 billion program, which replaced an unused ¥75 billion authorization established in October 2025. Metaplanet announced plans on October 13, 2026, to fund repurchases and refinance debt by issuing ¥52 billion in zero-coupon convertible bonds due in 2031, with the offering expected to close on October 29, 2026.
According to CryptoSlate, the company held 44,000 BTC at the end of September 2026 and had drawn $649.5 million under an $800 million credit facility backed by its Bitcoin (BTC) reserves. Metaplanet plans to allocate approximately ¥23.6 billion of the bond proceeds to pay down part of that loan facility in November 2026, lowering its outstanding credit balance to roughly $500.5 million.
