Qubic pauses chain after $1.3M wallet drain as MEXC freezes assets

Qubic validators halted the network after an attacker drained $1.3 million in QU from 1,404 wallets, leaving 87.1% of funds trapped while MEXC froze the rest.

Attackers drained 2.94 trillion QU worth roughly $1.3 million from 1,404 wallets between 23:42 UTC on October 17 and 01:26 UTC on October 18, 2026. According to developers and reports by cryptobriefing.com and Bitcoin.com News, the breach stemmed from predictable wallet seeds generated on legacy Apple devices, Safari browsers, and older iOS applications rather than a flaw in the core blockchain. In response, Qubic validators halted transaction processing at tick 85,371,949.

The pause left approximately 87.1% of the stolen tokens immobilized on the Qubic chain. The remaining 12.9% was sent to the crypto exchange MEXC, which froze the receiving deposit account. Bitget also suspended QUBIC deposits and withdrawals as a precaution.

Developers resolved the seed-generation flaw in client version 4.26.4 and secured other exposed funds prior to further unauthorized transfers, while network staking through QEARN remained unaffected. Restitution for victims depends on an upcoming vote by Qubic's Computor quorum.
