Update to Solana plans Alpenglow upgrade to target 150ms finality

Based on reporting by CryptoRank; not yet independently confirmed.

Anza and the Solana Foundation confirmed the Alpenglow consensus upgrade for October 21, 2026, though telemetry shows 20.3% of staked SOL is on unprepared nodes.

Core developer firm Anza and the Solana Foundation confirmed readiness to activate the Alpenglow consensus upgrade on October 21, 2026, between 14:00 and 14:50 UTC at slot 459,653,000. As previously reported, the upgrade replaces the network's voting system to compress settlement times down to roughly 150 milliseconds. However, telemetry from October 21 indicated that approximately 20.3% of staked SOL was linked to nodes flagged as unprepared for the migration, requiring close observation of block production following the switch.

According to techtimes.com, the transition caps an 18-month development cycle that replaces the original TowerBFT engine with Votor, a consensus protocol designed alongside ETH Zurich researchers. Votor cuts transaction finality by about 98% from 12.8 seconds by shifting validator voting off-chain and using BLS signature aggregation. CoinDesk reported that the upgrade also scraps traditional vote fees in favor of a validator admission ticket costing 0.8 SOL per epoch.
