Stop order

An order that waits unseen until a trade prints at its trigger price, then sends a market order (or, as a stop-limit, a limit order). A stop-loss is a stop that closes a losing position.

Why it matters

It caps a loss at roughly its price — not exactly: in a fast market the market order it sends can fill below the stop.
