If an exchange closes your account, where does the money go?

KuCoin is closing accounts in Russia and Belarus, and MEXC and Bitget did similar earlier this month. Dumb question: when an exchange closes your account, what happens to the money in it?
My guess is the balance doesn't just vanish. The exchange still owes you the coins, and there's usually a withdrawal window with a deadline. I can't work out what happens if you miss it, or if you can't pass the checks because you no longer live where the account says.
If you've been through this on another exchange, I'd like to hear how it went.
