Update to Crypto market liquidations reach $1.49 billion after Binance security breach
Based on reporting by CryptoRank; not yet independently confirmed.
Binance estimated a $6.3 billion security breach after a DevOps laptop compromise, triggering up to $1.54 billion in crypto liquidations as major token prices fell.
A $6.3 billion security breach at Binance triggered widespread liquidations across the market, the exchange reported on October 30, 2026. As previously reported, market sell-offs initially caused around $1.49 billion in forced position closures, a total that tradingview.com later reported reached $1.54 billion across roughly 237,000 to 243,000 traders. Binance stated that preliminary findings pointed to a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, which gave an unauthorized actor access to a service container to execute withdrawal transactions.
The resulting market downturn drove Bitcoin (BTC) down to between $76,350 and $76,460, while Ethereum (ETH) dropped below $2,200. Liquidations were heavily concentrated on long positions, which accounted for up to 86.8% of total forced closures. BTC liquidations reached up to $498.9 million, ETH accounted for up to $359.4 million, and assets including BNB and Solana (SOL) also logged double-digit million-dollar liquidation totals as their spot prices retreated.
Binance stated that it found no evidence of a private key leak and pledged to cover all losses using its SAFU fund and company reserves. cryptoticker.io reported that about $2.7 billion to $3 billion of the taken assets have been frozen on-chain, while investigators at TRM Labs attributed the attack to North Korea's TraderTraitor group. Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while conducting security reviews, with withdrawals expected to resume within 48 hours.
