UPDATE: Coinbase details USDC clearinghouse following CFTC registration
CIE News ·
Following CFTC approval for Coinbase Clearing LLC, the firm revealed it will operate a 24-hour USDC-native clearinghouse for fully collateralized contracts while using partners for margined products.
As previously reported, Coinbase received Derivatives Clearing Organization approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. New operational details show that the registered entity, Coinbase Clearing LLC, will function as a USDC-native clearinghouse, according to Decrypt. The facility is designed to accept USD Coin (USDC) as collateral and provide continuous 24-hour settlement.
While the clearinghouse will directly settle fully collateralized contracts, Coinbase indicated that other derivatives will rely on third parties. Specifically, margined derivatives and upcoming single-stock perpetual contracts for Apple, Tesla, and Nvidia will continue to clear through existing partners, according to the report.
The regulatory clearance marks the completion of the firm's derivatives infrastructure stack, joining its designated contract market and futures commission merchant entities.
