MetaMask shuts down Ethereum validators after security breach diverts rewards

MetaMask is taking its Ethereum staking infrastructure offline following a security incident that redirected block rewards, though the team stated user wallets remain safe.

MetaMask is pulling its Ethereum (ETH) staking services out of service after a security incident caused validator fee recipient addresses to be altered, according to CoinDesk. Security researcher Kaden reported that 18 of 19 MetaMask-operated validators sent block rewards totaling an estimated 0.36 ETH to an unexpected wallet, prompting a precautionary exit of roughly 17,000 validators holding 523,000 ETH. MetaMask stated there is no immediate threat to user wallets, while Lido noted that affected validators will finish exiting by October 7, warning stakers could face up to 45 days in queue delays to re-enter.
