Update to ASIC opens consultation on crypto platform rules ahead of April 2027 rollout

Based on reporting by CoinDesk; not yet independently confirmed.

ASIC detailed timelines for its crypto platform rules, opening consultation through November 27, 2026, before regulations take effect on April 8, 2027.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has outlined specific timelines for its proposed regulatory framework covering cryptocurrency exchanges and digital asset custodians. As previously reported when Australia launched public consultations on platform rules following legislation passed in April 2026, the regulator opened its consultation period on October 15, 2026, and will accept feedback through November 27, 2026.

According to CoinDesk, ASIC plans to issue final guidance and standards in March 2027, with the new regulatory regime taking effect on April 8, 2027. Existing cryptocurrency companies operating in the country will have until October 7, 2027, to submit an application for an Australian financial services license and will be permitted to continue operations while the regulator reviews their submissions.

The drafted rules establish requirements for capital resources, trade execution, conflict-of-interest management, and the segregation of customer assets, according to CoinDesk and Cointelegraph. ASIC Commissioner Alan Kirkland stated that the approach follows the principle of "same activity, same risk, same regulatory outcome" to match foreign frameworks. ASIC reported that it has received more than 140 applications from firms seeking authorization for digital asset services.
