Starknet opens governance vote on potential move to independent Layer 1

Starknet launched a seven-day Snapshot vote on October 15, 2026, to determine whether developers should research transitioning the network to an independent quantum-resistant Layer 1.

Starknet published a non-binding governance vote on Snapshot on October 15, 2026, asking STRK holders and stakers whether the network should research transitioning from an Ethereum Layer 2 to an independent Layer 1 blockchain. The proposal aims to address future quantum computing risks by giving the network full control over its infrastructure rather than relying on Ethereum for data availability and bridging.

The vote closes on October 22, 2026, and offers three choices: supporting the research effort, opposing it, or remaining neutral, according to the governance forum. Starknet confirmed that the poll does not authorize an immediate migration, STRK will remain the native token without a replacement, and existing bridges to Ethereum will stay open.

StarkWare cited concerns that Ethereum's upgrade schedule could slow quantum security improvements for external components, even though Starknet's internal STARK proofs and account abstraction are already post-quantum secure. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson stated the urgency stems from a target to establish quantum-proofing by 2027.
