European crypto platforms are phasing in restrictions on Tether before an ESMA deadline of January 8, 2027, as Circle's USDC becomes the first token designated as significant e-money under MiCA.
European cryptocurrency exchanges are enforcing phased restrictions on Tether (USDT) ahead of a January 8, 2027 compliance cutoff set by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). hoge.gg reported that ESMA advised national regulators on October 8, 2026, to ensure licensed platforms remove unauthorized stablecoins by the end of a three-month wind-down window.
Regulators have also designated Circle's USDC as the European Union's first significant e-money token, according to cryptopotato.com. Beginning in November 2026, the French authority ACPR and the European Banking Authority (EBA) will move oversight of core reserves and capital-backing requirements for significant tokens under centralized European supervision.
Despite the regulatory transition and phased restrictions on Tether, centralized order books across the Eurozone maintain stable trading conditions. Tokens including USDT, USDC, and USDe continue to trade near parity.
