CIE News ·
Cryptocurrency liquidations reached $331 million after September CPI inflation data exceeded forecasts, with long positions accounting for roughly 82% of total wiped positions.
Cryptocurrency derivatives saw approximately $331 million in liquidations on October 14, 2026, after hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data sparked an abrupt market retreat. As previously reported, the U.S. Consumer Price Index climbed 3.7% year-over-year in September, topping economists' forecasts of 3.6%. Bitcoin.com News reported that bullish long positions represented roughly 82% of the wiped trades across the market as 88,886 traders were liquidated.
Bitcoin (BTC) dropped to an intraday low of $81,500 after trading above $84,100, according to CoinGlass and market figures cited by Bitcoin.com News. BTC positions accounted for roughly $69.95 million of the liquidations, with 80.9% being longs. Ether (ETH) declined toward $2,420, racking up $64.33 million in liquidations with 82.6% in long contracts. Binance made up about 49% of all exchange liquidations, including a single $7.03 million ETHUSDT long position that was forcefully closed.
Altcoins also experienced downward pressure during the wider de-risking event. CoinMarketCap reported that Ether.fi (ETHFI) fell 3.69% over a four-hour window amid broader market weakness and liquidations following the macro data. Derivatives data showed that perpetual funding rates for BTC briefly moved into negative territory during the decline.
